How lobbyists get paid

One interesting phenomenon in the consultancy world is the way senior lobbyists are paid by their employers. To avoid paying high Belgian income taxes, many have financial arrangements with their employers where they are paid as if they were freelancers, even though they are fulltime staff. This involves setting up so-called management companies and pretending to have multiple clients. Or they claim to be expats and have their salaries paid abroad, despite living in Belgium for decades. This type of arrangement is widespread for those earning over €100,000 a year.
